If there's anyone who understands what it's like to make music for young, queer San Franciscans, it's Oakland born singer Melina Duterte. Duterte fronts the local indie lo-fi pop group Jay Som, making music full of longing and heartbreak - the real cry on the bus kind of tunes. The band released their second studio album on March 10th titled Everybody Works. A highlight for me comes in "The Bus Song," a song that feels so very tuned into the act of taking public transportation all over the city - to work, to school, to a lover's house. The anonymity of what Duterte is singing about feel relatable, monotonous, and a bit heartbreaking.
